PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY: 1
CHARLES WILLIAM SUPER, 97
The Oldest Man in
Who's Who
BORN in Pottsville, Pa.,
Sept. 12, 1842, Charles
William Super was early left
with responsibilities. These
he met by teaching and, in
1868, by taking over a classical
academy in Delaware. In
1867 he had married Mary
Louise Clewell of Canfield,
Ohio. Soon he was in Ger-
many stugying Latin, Greek,
Anglo-Saxon, Sanskrit, He-
brew, Arabric. Typical was
his choice of the University
of Tubingen--where English
speaking students were few.
In 1879 he accepted the chair
of Greek at Ohio University
in Athens, in 1884 he became
president. He made a small,
poor university outstanding:
his first step was to secure
$5,000 for a College of Edu-
cation.
