FIL: El. 1350
My father, who was comparatively a poor man, once told me that his
fa. ther J who was comparatively a rich man, had said on more than one
occasion that he had fO'lll1. d it much harder to keep hi e fortune after he had
made it than it had been to make the fortune.
Any fool may be lucky: some accidental discovery, some chance
inheritance, some stupid blunder even, may result in a man's finding
. himself possessed of a I arge amount of wealth.
• A fool for luck" is an old saying. There's another saying that " A
fool and his money soon part company". Still another one is that " Easy
comes, easy goes".
Most men who acquire fortunes by accident-- that is to say, without
strenuous effort on their own part-- soon lose them.
The man la- eking the possession of physical strength and intellectual
dexterity sufficient to enable him to grasp, to take away from his fellows,
either by physical force or by mental cunning, is incapable of resisting
the predatory attacks of his fellows.
There are rare instances of children being born into the world with
finely balanced physical organizations, with great vitality of body and
fineness of brain, who, without voluntary effort on their part and without
the training of necessities, grow to be adults possessing sufficient
Itrength of body and mind to make them the superiors of most of their kind.
