Some of my friends and visitors have been reading some of my
essays. Some of them have been very complimentary in their
expressions. They naturally would be: in the first place, they
are my guests; in the second place, many of them are beholden to
me for employment and business opportunities.
Some of these men have even gone so far as to urge me to
publish, or permit to be published, some of my disquisitions- or,
at least, to allow them to be used by other men than myself
for the purpose of being furbished up and put in more practical
shape for publication.
At times I feel a little conceited, and then I think that
some day I will re- read the essays and edit them or re- write
them for publication. I am sure that some of them furnish very
acceptable reading matter to larger or smaller numbers of people.
~ should they not do so?
They have one characteristic-- that is to say, some of them
have the characteristic-- of being perfectly frank. They are
expressions of my own actual thoughts-- some of them are. Some of
