:By appointment, the grea.t English newspaper publisher was brought to "1lr/' room,
at Hotel Powhata.u9 by OUl" mc:tuaJ. protege, Roy Howard.
I was glad to meet this man, whose pod tion as a. newspa.per man in England is
.amewhat similar to '1!J7 own. position in this country. I felt that he would be better
able to 1m.derstand my peculiar requirements for informa.tion, than would any other
man of equaJ. prominence and information ooncerning Engla;nd' s atf'a1rs. I also relied
en the endorsement of Howard securing for me more of his confidence--more certa.1nt,.
en. bis part that I was not merely impertinently ourious, and not liable to abuse in
S1.1'I'R7 that confidenoe.
PhySically, lforthcliffe is a large man. I think he is ta.ller tha.u me by a
little; and that his weight exeeeds somewhat '1113 own two-hundred-odd po'tmds. He
h&rdly looked like an Bnglisbman, although he had. a hea.vy jowl and strong chin. He
resembled, ~sica.llYt some of tbose Hollanders Whom I have met on ~ previous travels
in Europe. However, I ga,ve slight attention to his p~ioal appeara.uee and. bearing.
Perhaps the most remarkable effect he produced on me, was that during my taJ.k: with
him, and even after he had lett me, I had. no im;pression that I was talking, or had been
ta.llting, with a.n Englisllma:a., or a foreigner of any sort. I doubt it anyone who had
ca.suall,- overheard us would have imagined that we were not both Am.erioaus.
I had one, and only one, rem1nd.e~ that I was ta.lking with "John Bull". I had let
loose in one of '1J13 usua.l, energetio decl.ama.tions ooncerning '11!9' own views of the actual
s1 t1la.tion ot Americat s relation to her alli.s. In the midst of 'I1l9' full awing, lforth-cliff.
b'arst out with -Hearl heartH. This startled me and I stopped. It struk me
at first that these two 'WOrds were the not 'Ill'lusuaJ. Am.erieau interro;ption of "l!el"8!
hereZ"-- "Stop thatl" I stopped and looked at him to wait for him to finish bis
1Ittel'J"tq)tion and make some further il1ter~eotion. Be looked surprised and nonp11l8ea..,. ~
