I wish to make some diary notes to Which 1 may at some time myself
refert and Which may be of value to members of my family after my death.
Thursday, April' 22, my son James sent an urgent telephoned. message by
my secretary to the effect that he Wanted to see me personally, and that
unless I could grant him an interview. he WaS going to write me a long
letter.
I received him. He told me of a talk he had had withJ. C. Harper,
a daY or two previous, concerning btlsiness cond it ions in our eastern papers
owing to the paper shortage and the high price of paper.
Harper asked him whether I had been informed of this situation by Jim
himself. Jim Said he had not informed me. It appears that Harper then
told him that his father would certainly hold him responsible for the bad
condi ti ons exist ing. Jim de claret to Harper that he did not consider himself
responsi ble f or the management of the business.
After telling me of this interview, Jim said to me 9 "'Dad, I do not
consider that I am any longer responsible for the bu.siness .. tr
