THg RELlTION OF JOHN P. SCRIPPS TO THE SCRIPPS CONCERN
M. A. 1fuRae, the maternal grandfather of John P. Scripps, claims that John's mother
on ller dying bed asked him directly to take care 0 f her boy, and further twJ. t his daughter
told her doctor, Dr. ~I.eade, that she wanted her father to take care of John.
Edith McRae Scripps was dying of influenze, and it is mown. that one suffering from
) -,
this disease is afflicted with a high fever and continuously in a state of deli;rium.
One as sick as Edith was from this disease could not and should not be held re8ponsiblez~
for 'Mha t she would say. Certainly such a doeuruent as a Will Signed by her at such & time
iolld be considered void by any court.
While in Washington about the middle of November, 1917, I had a slight stroke of
ps.ralysis. For a period of more than ten days I noticed that my right eye pained me
s;·mewhat and for one or two days during the latter part of the attack it was difficult
for me to read. About a week before I subUd tted :my case to & phySician I noticedthat the
right side of m:y mouth had beccme womewhat uncontrollable so that a few crumbs of the food
I ,\s eating would fall out.
In no other way was I consciou8 of any phySical distrubance. I . went on with the
iu,porta.nt business I ha.d and fi nished it, and then I went to Dr. :'{organ in Washington,
~ ~d lifting up the right side of m:y mu.sta ,;he called his attention to the drooping corner
or my mouth. He immediately ordered. me to go ,to a speCialist, whose name I forget, who
teated me, as I understood, to see if I was afflicted wi th any aphasia. He discovered no
8~tom, s of this. He also called on me to pronounce a number of difficult words, amongst
ethers, something like "Peter Piper picked scme pickles".
He directed me to go home and go to bed saying that ' he would call on me later. .An
ho~ or so later this specUalist and D:r. :Morgan came to my house and examined me, and
