Description	Faculty Common, located on the third floor of Alden Library . Image is one of a series of 11 commemorative images of Alden Library shot by Thomas R. Schiff on May 24, 2009, and donated by the photographer to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the library. Image measure approximately 40" x 13" unframed and 46 3/4" x 19 3/4" matted and framed. Thomas R. Schiff is a life-long Cincinnatian and a 1970 graduate of Ohio University. His professional life is in the insurance business but photography is his passion. Schiff has been shooting with a Hulcherama 360 panoramic camera since 1994. Four books of his unique photography have been published, including Panoramic Ohio and Vegas 360. His images are widely held in institutions across the country, including Ohio University's Kennedy Museum. Construction began on the present university library, Alden Library, in 1966, and the building was occupied in 1969. Built at a cost of $5.3 million, the seven story edifice was designed to hold 800,000 volumes. This capacity was expanded to 1.2 million volumes with the completion of the east and west (4th-7th story) wings in 1972, bringing the total cost to $7.9 million. The second floor was renovated to create the Learning Commons in 2004-2005, followed by a third floor Faculty Commons in 2007.
