Description	Staff Sergeant Richard "Jake" Jacobs, from rural Clinton, Missouri, spent two years in the Army from 1968-1970 as an infantryman with the Big Red One. He recalls volunteering for the Army at the age of 18 so he could enter the military with two friends who were drafted. Staff Sergeant Jacobs describes the physical portion of basic training as a "piece of cake." Following basic training, he flew to Fort Ord, California, which he describes as "another world." He speaks of "hippies and anti-war protestors" harassing him in Salinas and Monterey. Staff Sergeant Jacobs also notes the culture shock of making new friends from diverse backgrounds. Arriving in Vietnam and discovering he would be assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, Staff Sergeant Jacobs said, "This is good. This is where I want to be." He mentions his missions in Vietnam were primarily search and destroy. He describes his first combat mission as a "village seal" wherein a village occupied by enemy soldiers is surrounded during the night and the soldiers are ambushed when they try to leave. Staff Sergeant Jacobs was shot in the leg during an ambush, but returned to the field after a brief convalescence. He goes on to note the camaraderie in the Big Red One, commenting that his pride in the unit increased the longer he was in the 1st Infantry Division. Staff Sergeant Jacobs speaks of difficulty in re-entering civilian society after he shipped back to the States in 1970 and finishes by saying, "I'll be a Big Red One until I die."
