Description
Colonel
Greg
Wilcoxon
from
Ironton
,
Ohio
,
joined
the
ROTC
at
Marshall
University
in
May
1985
,
entering
the
National
Guard
after
receiving
his
commission
.
Colonel
Wilcoxon
comments
on how the
1st
Division
assimilated
them
right
away
upon
deployment
to
Iraq
regardless
of their
National
Guard
status
. "
We
fit
in
very
well
with the
1st
Division.
"
Wilcoxon
was
present
in
Iraq
and
providing
security
for their
first
democratic
election
,
which
he
saw
as a
tremendous
success
.
When
asked
about
having
female
soldiers
, the
colonel
describes
the
need
to have
female
soldiers
to
work
at
checkpoints
as a
matter
of
respect
for the
Iraqi
women
they would have to
question
and
search
. The
colonel
describes
the
5
females
attached
to his
unit
(a
combat
arms
unit
is
not
supposed
to
include
females)
as a "
great
asset
" as
well
as a
necessity
,
confirming
that they would
go
out
on
combat
operations
with the "
grunts
" and would
do
quite
well
.
When
asked
about
the
use
of
technology
in
battle
,
Wilcoxon
cites
the
usefulness
of the
Blue
Force
Tracker
and
being
able
to
act
on
intelligence
very
quickly
.
Another
change
that has
come
with the
Iraq
War
,
notes
Wilcoxon
,
is
the
more
active
role
of
National
Guard
units
alongside
the
regular
Army
.
Colonel
Wilcoxon
closes
by
expressing
his
pride
in
serving
with the
1st
Infantry
Division
.
