| Description | Ice skating at one of the four lakes/ponds formerly located on the grounds. The four lakes were built so that water flowed from the highest lake to the lowest lake and acted as a filtration system for water used in the bathrooms and laundry on the hospital grounds. A rumor regarding the lakes states that the four lakes were designed to resemble the four playing card suits. However, all plot maps and photos show the lakes as amorphous shapes. The lakes were a well-known feature of the hospital's landscape until the relocation of the Hocking River and State Route 682 during 1966-1968. Several floods during the 1960s contributed to the eventual destruction of the lakes.
When the grounds were originally designed by landscape architect Herman Haerlin of Cincinnati, Ohio, the plan for the lakes and the surrounding grounds were based on Dr. Thomas S. Kirkbride's vision for asylums. Under the Kirkbride Plan it was believed that extensive grounds with parks, lakes, and farmland were beneficial to the success of an asylum.
At the Athens Lunatic Asylum, lakes were considered an integral part of the landscape of the asylum and for the health and well-being of the patients. Haerlin designed the 60-acre hospital grounds using native plants and landscaping around the natural contours of the land. The landscape was the final aspect of the asylum to be completed, following the plan of Haerlin and carried out by landscaper George Link over a thirty-year period. |
